Before you agree
Meeting
Transport & location
Money & ID
Exit & after
The two items that matter most
If you only do two things from this list:
- Get there and back on your own. Not in their car, not in their cab. Independent transport is the single biggest difference between a controllable situation and an uncontrollable one.
- Pre-agree an exit cue with a friend. Something specific and a little weird — "Is the cat still at the vet?" — so it can't be confused with a real text. They reply with "Yes, you should come get them" and you have an immediate, plausible reason to leave.
Everything else is good practice. Those two are non-negotiable.
Frequently asked questions
Is this for first dates only?
No. The 'meeting' section is for first meetings, but the location, transport, money, and exit sections apply to any in-person date — including with someone you've been seeing for a while.
Why no advice about 'meet in a public place'?
That advice is on every safety checklist on the internet and most people already know it. We focus on the things that are less obvious — like having a transport plan that doesn't depend on the other person, and a real exit cue with a friend.
Can I print this?
Yes — use Ctrl+P or Cmd+P. The print stylesheet hides nav and ads.
Does this apply to LGBTQ+ dating?
Yes, and in some scenarios — especially when one or both partners are not out publicly — extra discretion around location and shared circles is important. The fundamentals are the same.
What about meeting someone from abroad in person for the first time?
Treat it as a higher-stakes version of a first date. Add: a hotel that is not the one they suggested, an embassy contact saved, and a friend who knows the meeting plan in detail.
