How to write a great opener
The shortest possible version: be specific, ask one easy question, and don't compliment their looks. That's roughly 80% of it.
The three-part structure
Most openers that get replies look like this:
- Hook — reference something specific from their profile.
- Personal connection — show why it caught your eye.
- Easy question — give them something simple to answer.
Example: "Your sourdough setup in photo 3 is intense (I'm a stretch-and-fold convert myself). Are you a strict 24-hour cold proof or do you cheat sometimes?"
What to avoid
- "Hey," "hi," "hello" — gets the lowest reply rate of any opener category in every public study we've seen.
- Looks-based compliments — feels canned even when you mean it, and shifts the dynamic before there's any connection.
- Open-ended philosophy questions — "What's your purpose in life?" is a job interview, not a flirt.
- Multi-paragraph messages — looks intense and is hard to reply to.
Frequently asked questions
Are the openers generated by AI?
The openers are assembled from a curated set of conversation-starting structures — questions, callbacks, and observations — that are filled in based on what you tell us about their profile. It runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
Is this safe to use on Hinge, Bumble, or Tinder?
Yes — these are just text suggestions. You'll still want to edit them so they sound like you. The platforms have no way to know an opener was suggested.
What makes a good opener?
Specificity and a small, easy-to-answer question. Bad openers are generic ('hey', 'hi beautiful'). Good openers reference something concrete in their profile and give them an obvious next thing to say.
Should I always ask a question?
Usually yes, but not always. A confident observation + a tiny invitation can also work. The tool gives you a mix.
Does this work for same-sex dating?
Yes. The tool is pronoun-neutral and the suggested structures are not gender-specific.
