The First-Date Safety Checklist Experienced Daters Actually Use

Before the date

• One short video call beforehand. Even three minutes is enough to confirm they're real and match their photos.
• Search their name and any other details you have. Not to dig, just to confirm nothing alarming surfaces.
• Pick the venue yourself, or at least veto theirs if it's unfamiliar or remote.
• Tell one friend the name, the venue, the time, and the plan.
• Set a check-in time with that friend.
• Charge your phone fully.

Choosing the venue

A daytime coffee shop is the safest first-date venue ever invented. It's bright, public, has limited intoxication risk, and provides a natural one-hour cap. Bars work for second dates. Restaurants work once you know the person. Their apartment never works for a first meeting.

Getting there and home

• Your own transportation. Don't be picked up. Don't share a ride with them.
• If you use a rideshare, drop and pick up a block away from your actual address.
• Don't let them walk you home, even if the date went well.

During the date

• Keep your drink in your sight. If you walk away from it, order a new one.
• Pace your drinking. Two-drink maximum on a first date is a reasonable default.
• Trust your gut. If something feels off — the way they describe an ex, an inconsistency from their profile, a reaction to a small thing — believe yourself. You can leave.
• Don't reveal your full address, workplace, or financial situation on the first meeting.

Hard exits without drama

You don't owe anyone a long first date. Reasonable exits include: "I have an early morning so I should head out," "My friend just texted that something came up," "I'm going to call it a night, thank you for the drink." None of these require an apology. None of them require explanation.

After the date

• Check in with the friend who knew where you were.
• If something felt off, write it down before you sleep. Memories of small red flags fade by morning.
• If you don't want a second date, say so clearly within a day or two. "I had a nice time but I didn't feel a romantic connection" is a complete sentence.
• If anything happened that felt unsafe, report the profile in the app.
